I have a love for exploring and a love for books. While I realize this is not news, when I combined the two together recently I realized that attending a book signing definitely fits the criteria for media immersion. This hadn’t dawned on me because most of the authors I read are dead, which I will talk about at some later date. Last week I was in Outwrite Books for a book signing of Big Sex, Little Death by Susie Bright. While the reading was happening in the front area, I sat in the back cafe section. Since most of the store was between where I hid and where Ms. Bright read, during the few down moments (like when a question was being asked that I couldn’t hear), I took in the store. After the reading and before I got the guts to ask Ms. Bright for her signature (actually I never got the guts, she saw me with her book and asked if I’d like her signature), I perused the shop a little more and found that while the selection isn’t as wide as Barnes and Noble, that is the point. I don’t ever remember seeing any books, calendars or magazines like those on display at Outwrite on display at any Barnes and Noble I’ve shopped at.
